They used the suspension bridge and the niagara river at black rock, near buffalo. They traveled on boats from lewiston and youngstown. And some even swam. Buffalo 10:00 AM victor trabucco is considered one of the finest glass artists in the world. A resident of clarence, new york, trabucco’s astonishing art glass paperweights—glass objects containing colorful re-creations of flowers, butterflies and lizards encased in crystal—are recognized internationally for their beauty, innovation and technique. The groundbreaking installation, glass within glass: the magic of the trabucco studio – the paperweight artistry of victor, jon, and david trabucco, will include more than 40 works by trabucco, as well as representations by his twin sons, david and jon.
The exhibition will provide visitors the opportunity to enjoy, understand and appreciate how the trabuccos manipulate glass to achieve extraordinary results. Additionally, a timeline will provide historical context about art glass paperweights and trace how they progressed from the 1800s to present-day through the works of the trabucco studio. The works in this timeline have been carefully selected from the margaret woodbury strong paperweight collection, a gathering of glass not shown to the public in more than three decades.
Some of the earliest paperweights were made in murano, italy, an island in the venetian lagoon in the 1840s. Pietro bigaglia is generally accepted to be the first to exhibit what the art world calls glass paperweights, an act that culminated in the creation in france of what are considered to be the art form’s greatest works made 1845 - 1860.
The trabucco studio exhibition is guest curated by michael calleri, a buffalo movie critic and paperweight enthusiast. Calleri has long studied the work of the trabuccos and the centuries-old history of paperweight traditions. He will provide an introduction for the exhibition’s accompanying brochure. As guest curator, he has lead the selection of the trabucco studio paperweights in the installation, as well as personally selecting more than 50 strong collection paperweights for the historical timeline. In 2009, calleri founded the most popular group on facebo. The gallery will be open 11am – 9pm on first friday july 7?eleven twenty projects 1120 main street, buffalo, ny 14209?“if men were not insensible to the beauty of nature the great works necessary for the purposes of commerce might be carried on without destroying it, and at times might even contribute to her charms by rendering her more accessible; but it is not so. They desecrate whatever they touch. They cut down the forests with a wantonness for which there is no excuse, even gain, & leave the herbless rocks to glimmer in the burning sun.” - thomas cole, 1836 eleven twenty projects is pleased to present course of empire, a solo exhibition by photographer lesley maia horowitz. The show opens thursday june 8 from 6-9pm, and runs through july 29, 2017. The gallery is located at 1120 main st buffalo, ny 14209.
The works selected for this exhibit allows the viewer to step into a void, contemplating and refreshing painter thomas cole’s 1836 prophetic series of five paintings, course of empire, which depicted the decline of a modern civilization. Cole’s great cycle evokes comparison with western new york’s decaying industrial backdrop, reinvigorating plaintive notions of a lost american landscape with stark immediacy and commanding relevance. Over the past decade, horowitz has been documenting abandoned landscapes of the northeast united states, focusing on historical industrial architecture and former routes of power. Her current photographic work recasts the disintegrating topography of post-industrial america, revealing the unsettling beauty and solemn grandeur left in the wake of failed promise.
